Newfoundland

We returned from our fabulous trip to Newfoundland about a week ago. Greg had been there twice for work, but it was a first for Connie. Our trip started in St. John's, which was where our flight landed. Our first day, Saturday June 13, was foggy and cool, but we had amazing weather for the rest of the week. We were able to see many icebergs, but only a few whales in the distance. Here are the locations we visited:
  • Twillingate, which is known as the iceberg capital of North America,
  • Rocky Harbour and Gros Morne National Park,
  • L'Anse aux Meadows, where the Vikings landed 500 years ago,
  • Corner Brook,
  • St. John's and Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America.
The scenery was amazing, and the people were incredibly friendly. Of course, traveling with a baby provides many opportunities to meet and visit with people. Emily's smiles were so popular that the hosts of the bed and breakfasts regularly picked her up to play with her so we could have a break. Wanda, from the B & B in Twillingate, pronounced "I just loves'er!" We found that the Twillingate people had the strongest Newfie accent. And then there was the couple that we chatted with on the Gros Morne boat tour - the husband spotted us across all the check in lines in the airport half a week later, and waved good bye to Emily.

While we didn't get up to Labrador, we did cover a lot of highlights. We may never get back, but do recommend visiting Newfoundland. It is a beautiful place!
