This project has been on our to-do list for a very long time. There were so many things that I didn't like about the room, but there was no pressing need to correct them. Once I got pregnant, the discussions about renos resurfaced, since Emily will be moving into the computer room to make room for the new babe. This room will continue to be a spare bedroom, but will also become our computer room.
So what were our/my issues?
- The hole in the ceiling. The previous owners removed a wall to make the room bigger, exposing a hole in the ceiling that was exactly the width and length of the missing wall.
- Unfinished corner. The portion of the wall that used to hold the doorway was never finished and so it had raw drywall edges.
- Paint colour. Mustard yellow? Not exactly eye candy.
- Light switches & plug ins. One switch turned on nothing and there was a plug in two inches below the ceiling. Hmm...
- Wall panelling. It screamed 1975, the year the house was built. It also had a gap in it after the previous owners moved the wall.
- Shelving but no closet. Okay, so I stored A LOT of junk on the shelves, but they ran the length of the wall and ended in front and blocked part of the window.
- Bedroom door. The door was installed upside down after the wall was moved so that it would open to the left. This means that the door handle is about 10" higher than normal.
One neat detail about the reno... We moved everything out into the family room just before the Grey Cup game. Heidi & Neil came to visit us a couple days later, and were the first to stay overnight on the mattress in the family room. The bed was put back about a week ago, and Heidi and Neil again stopped in, being the first to sleep on the bed in the new room.
Here's a peek at some of the changes. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pics of Greg and his Dad constructing the new closet. Thanks to everyone who helped out!!
